About Kolkata Menopause Society

The Kolkata Menopause Society (KMS) established in 2019 is the Kolkata chapter of the national Indian Menopause Society (IMS), which was launched in 1995 to foster the comprehensive health and well-being of middle-aged and elderly women in India.

Operating as a highly active, multidisciplinary team of primarily gynaecologists, physicians, endocrinologists, psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals, KMS is deeply integrated into the city’s medical and community health ecosystem.

Our Kolkata society is academically active and conducts continuing medical education programs, symposiums, seminars, webinars, workshops, conferences from time-to-time to keep our members updated of the recent advances in our speciality domain.

The society also takes pride in bringing together all allied specialists from various part of the city and state and encourage them to meaningfully contribute to further enhance our knowledge and deeper understanding of the health and well-being of our middle-aged and elderly women. To make it holistic, we also encourage health-care professionals i.e., nutritionists, psychologists, counsellors, physical instructors to join as members to make it a more inclusive and vibrant group. We encourage young physicians from our speciality to join us, so as to enrich them professionally, as we are aware that menopausal health and related topics are not covered comprehensively in our post-graduate curriculum.

Together as a group we promise to keep the forum very interactive, academically stimulating and clinically enriching.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Kolkata Menopause Society (IMS) is to work in tandem with the national society to promote and support access to best practice health care for women through their menopause transition and post-reproductive years, enabling them to achieve optimal health and well-being.

Aims & Objectives

A multidisciplinary society committed to fostering the comprehensive well-being of the middle-aged & elderly Indian women, and advance the skills, knowledge and educational activities in this field.

Core Objectives & Focus Areas

  • Clinical Excellence: The society regularly hosts Continuing Medical Education (CME) seminars and conferences, keeping doctors and healthcare workers in West Bengal updated on the latest treatments for postmenopausal health.
  • Community Outreach: KMS prioritizes public awareness regarding midlife women’s health. They host regular public awareness camps (often in collaboration with the Bengal Obstetric & Gynaecological Society (BOGS)).
  • Holistic Health: Recognizing the importance of lifestyle in managing menopause, the society heavily promotes yoga and meditation. KMS frequently organizes large-scale yoga and health camps for women above 40 across various educational institutes and community centres.
  • NGO Collaboration: KMS works closely with local non-profits like URJO, a voluntary organization founded in 2007 dedicated to reassuring and restoring the self-confidence of women going through midlife crises and empty nest syndrome.

Key Milestones & Events

Collaborative Workshops

KMS regularly co-hosts major regional medical events in the city. For instance, they frequently partner with BOGS to bring specialized training to the region's medical professionals.

Background

The Calcutta chapter of the Indian Menopause Society (IMS), which was launched in 1995, was one of the very few early offshoots of IMS which was founded in 2002 under the secretaryship of our IMS Ex-President Dr Ratnabali Chakraborty and the support of founder members, Dr Kalidas Bakshi, Dr Sudip Chakraborty, Dr B D Mukherjee , Dr Kalpana Sarkar and others. However, the Kolkata Menopause Society, established in 2019, is an important chapter of the Indian Menopause Society. Our goal is to support the health and well-being of peri-menopausal and menopausal. Since our beginning, we have worked with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals. KMS has been organizing seminars and workshops to keep our community updated. Our outreach health camps aim to raise awareness about menopausal health and we partner with organizations like the Bengal Obstetric & Gynaecological Society. Moreover, KMS also collaborate with the Rotary Club and local NGOs like URJO to support women facing midlife challenges. Our recent initiative, ‘#YogaSamavesh’, is a testament to our commitment to helping women navigate the physical and mental changes during menopause.
